What happened at Bondi Beach
The attack unfolded during a public celebration marking the Jewish festival of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach. Police confirmed that two armed men, later identified as a father and son, opened fire on the crowd. The older attacker was killed at the scene, while his son sustained critical injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.
More than 40 people were admitted to hospital with injuries. The victims range in age from just 10 years old to 87. Many families are now facing unimaginable loss as investigations continue.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the nation shortly after the attack, stating that violence against Jewish Australians is an attack on the country as a whole. He described the tragedy as an assault on Australia’s values and way of life, adding that the nation stands united in grief.
