According to reports, the Prince of Wales may seek legal advice over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to develop a documentary marking the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.
The film is reportedly in the works with Netflix and is slated for release in August 2027 — three decades after Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.
Sources told Radar Online that the documentary will “examine Diana’s life, her treatment by the media and the monarchy, and the impact of her death on her sons”.
William’s Reported Objections
Those close to the 43-year-old heir to the throne claim he feels deeply uncomfortable about revisiting his mother’s story in what he reportedly views as a commercial enterprise — particularly given Meghan’s alleged involvement, as she never met Diana.
“What has struck a nerve for William is the extent of Meghan’s role in the project,” a source told the outlet.
“He feels that allowing her to influence or derive any benefit from Diana’s legacy crosses a deeply personal boundary, and he experiences it as a betrayal of his mother rather than a tribute.”
The insider further alleged that William sees “transforming his mother’s life into marketable content” as “deeply distasteful”.
“He firmly believes Diana herself would have been appalled by the idea of her story being repackaged for profit, especially by a global streaming platform,” they added.
As a result, William is reportedly “actively exploring every available obstacle that could be placed in the project’s path,” including possible legal measures.
Harry’s Determination to Proceed
Sources close to Prince Harry, however, insist he has no intention of abandoning the project. They argue that honouring his mother’s memory is “something he has an inherent right to do as her son”.
The tension comes against the backdrop of a long-standing rift between the Waleses and the Sussexes, which has persisted for more than five years since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and moved to the United States in 2020.
In the recent biography William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story by royal correspondent Russell Myers, it is suggested that fractures in the brothers’ relationship began as early as 2017, when Harry first introduced Meghan to the Royal Family.
The Prince and Princess of Wales — particularly Catherine — are said to have made genuine efforts to welcome Meghan into the fold.
