“So nothing can be done?” Isabella asked, her voice small.
Laura sighed. “Sometimes we just survive.”
But moments later, firm footsteps approached. Mr. Reed entered quietly, studying the child before him.
“Why would you say that?” he asked seriously. “You didn’t look like you were joking.”
Isabella swallowed hard.
“Because he stole from us,” she said. “He took everything. My mom almost died. My baby brother is on machines.”
Mr. Reed’s expression shifted.
“My staff verified their credentials,” he replied cautiously.
Isabella lifted her chin. “Do fair men work with thieves?”
The question lingered in the air.
“If you’re telling the truth,” Mr. Reed said slowly, “I will protect you. Can you prove it?”
She nodded.
Back in the boardroom, the men’s smiles faltered.
Isabella picked up a cup of cold coffee from the table and walked toward Ethan.
“You came to my house,” she said loudly. “You said your name was Ethan Blake. You drive a white sedan. Your company logo is a fox inside a circle.”
Murmurs spread.
Then she poured the coffee over him.
Gasps filled the room. Ethan sprang up, furious.
“When you change your shirt,” Isabella continued, shaking but steady, “everyone will see the long scar on your right arm. I saw it when you rolled up your sleeve.”
Marcus lunged forward, but Mr. Reed’s voice thundered, “Stop.”
Security stepped in.
“Show us your arm,” Mr. Reed ordered calmly.
Ethan hesitated. The sleeve was rolled back.
The scar was there.
The briefcase was opened. Inside: forged documents, fake passports, and a folder containing contracts bearing Carlos Morales’s name.
“Call the police,” Mr. Reed said quietly.
Later that day, he visited the hospital. Carlos sat in the waiting area, defeated.
“Your daughter saved my company from fraud,” Mr. Reed said, extending his hand. “Your funds will be restored. Your wife and son will receive proper care.”
Carlos wept openly.
Sofia and the baby were transferred to a private clinic in Austin. Slowly, the tiny boy grew stronger. Days later, Sofia opened her eyes and saw her family around her.
“What happened?” she whispered.
Carlos kissed her forehead. “Isabella happened.”
When the baby was declared stable, Carlos said softly, “We’ll name him Jonathan—after the man who listened. And because our daughter had the courage to speak.”
Mr. Reed kept his promise. The store reopened with secure contracts. Ava received a scholarship. Laura walked taller.
